So the implied conclusion, of course, is that the next time you see someone wealthy, or famous, or in a position of power -- those 'higher stations' that multiply sycophants and lead to people not being rebuked or given advice whether they feel they need it or not -- your response should be to pity them and to say, with trembling, "There, but for the grace of God, go I."
