Some friends recently gave me Anthony Powell's series of books, A Dance to the Music of Time. So the next fortnightly book will be the First Movement, which consists of three novels:
A Question of Upbringing
A Buyer's Market
The Acceptance World
The story of A Dance to the Music of Time opens in about 1921 and ends in about 1971. A Question of Upbringing (originally published in 1951) goes from about 1921 to 1924, A Buyer's Market (published in 1952) occurs around 1928, and The Acceptance World (published in 1955) is from 1931 to about 1934. Together they cover the life of Nick Jenkins and his closest friends in Britain from their school days, through university, into their early career.
The entire sequence gets its name from a painting by the seventeenth-century painters, Nicolas Poussin:
Beyond knowing that the series had some very favorable critical reception and a few very, very general things about the story, I know very little about what to expect, so we will see how it goes.
