Holy Name

by George Herbert

Jesu is in my heart, his sacred name
Is deeply carved there: but th’other week
A great affliction broke the little frame,
Ev’n all to pieces: which I went to seek:
And first I found the corner, where was J,
After, where ES, and next where U was graved,
When I had got these parcels, instantly
I sat me down to spell them, and perceived
That to my broken heart he was I ease you,
And to the whole is J E S U.

    Very lovely.

This is a favorite feast of mine. Seeing the care which people put into picking just the right baby name or the perfect online handle, it seems like devotion to the Holy Name ought to have some natural pull, but I think it's one of those "lost" pieties.

Here's the litany to the Holy Name of Jesus, which is one of the tenderest prayers I know.

It is strange how we neglect many of these smaller devotions, despite the fact that they link up to important parts of our lives.

  3. This is my favorite poem, one that has helped me remember that in the most difficult of times, I must at least utter His Holy name. I've posted this poem on my own blog as well.
